picture of a grocery list

Have you ever gone to the grocery store without a plan and instead come home with snacks instead of supper? You’re not alone! Making a grocery list might sound old-fashioned, but it’s one of the smartest ways to save money, reduce food waste, and make healthier choices for your family.

Plan simple, balanced meals using the MyPlate guide by making half your plate fruits and vegetables, plus lean proteins, whole grains, and low-fat dairy. Think about your schedule for the week. Are there any evenings you’ll need something quick, or meals you can stretch into leftovers?

Start with keeping a small notebook in the kitchen. As you run out of items throughout the week, be sure to add them to the list. It helps to write items down on the list in the order that you will find them in the store so you save time and stay focused.

An easy way to save money is to plan meals around sales. Check online ads and store circulars before you shop. See what’s on sale, what coupons are available, and what might pair with foods you already have at home. This helps stretch your food dollars and reduces food waste.

Before you grab your keys, check what’s already in your pantry, fridge, and freezer. You might be surprised at what you can make with ingredients you already have. Consider what fresh items could complement leftovers or pantry staples to create full meals.

Whether you prefer a paper list, a phone app, or a reusable meal planner, bring it with you and challenge yourself to stick to the list. This is tough to do because it’s hard to pass up a good deal. Check off items as you put them in your cart, and keep a running total of how much you are spending. Choosing store brands over name brands is another simple way to save because they’re nutritionally similar but cost less.

With a little planning, you can stretch your food dollars and bring home meals that you and your family will love. Small steps like planning meals and making a grocery list can add up to big savings and better nutrition over time.
