AIRE Essay

The Essay

The Essay prompt will change from year to year. This is just an example.

"Reflect on a "surprising" moment of gratitude and how it motivated you".

The judges aren't looking for a list of achievements here; they are looking for character. They are not looking for an essay about an activity, it must be about you.

Hands-On Lesson: The "Gratitude Map"

Instead of writing the whole essay, start with this brainstorming grid:

  • The Moment: What did someone do for you? (e.g., A mentor stayed late to help you with a presentation).
  • The Surprise: Why didn't you expect it? (e.g., You thought they were too busy or didn't notice you).
  • The Shift: How did your perspective change? (e.g., "I realized I wasn't alone in my project.")
  • The Action: What did you do because of this? (e.g., "I now volunteer to help Cloverbuds with their record books.")
