How to Clean Produce

Fresh fruits and vegetables are essential for a healthy diet, packed with vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants. They can also carry dirt, bacteria, or pesticide residue if not handled properly. Knowing how to clean your produce can protect your family’s health and help your fruits and vegetables stay fresh longer.

Before you start, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. Make sure cutting boards, knives, and countertops are clean and sanitized, and keep produce separate from raw meat, poultry, and seafood to prevent cross-contamination.

Most importantly, avoidusing soap, bleach, or commercial produce washes because these can leave harmful residues that you do not want to consume. When consumed, these residues can cause gastrointestinal discomfort and no one wants to experience that! Cleaning with only water is perfectly fine.

Washing Firm Produce
Firm fruits and vegetables like apples, cucumbers, and potatoes should be rinsed under running water. Use a clean produce brush to scrub the surface, removing dirt and any residues.

Berries, grapes, and tomatoes are more delicate. Place them in a colander and rinse gently under cool running water. Avoid soaking them, as this can cause mold or make them mushy.

For leafy greens like lettuce, kale, or spinach, start by removing any wilted leaves. Rinse each leaf under cool running water, then dry them with a clean kitchen towel or a salad spinner to keep them crisp.

Root Vegetables like carrots, beets, and turnips often have soil clinging to their surfaces. Scrub them well with a clean brush under running water before eating or cooking.

Mushrooms require careful handling when cleaning. Gently wipe them with a damp paper towel to remove any dirt. Avoid rinsing or soaking, as this can make them turn rubbery.

Storing Cleaned Produce
After washing, dry produce completely before refrigerating. Store in clean, dry containers or produce bags. Cut fruits and vegetables should be refrigerated and eaten within a few days for the best quality.

A little care in cleaning your produce can go a long way in keeping your family healthy. With proper washing and storage, you can enjoy fresh, safe, and delicious fruits and vegetables every day.
