At the peanut production meetings so far this year, I have been discussing thrips control with in-furrow systemic insecticides. In the process, I have indicated that thrips control with imidacloprid (Admire Pro and generics) has decreased overtime since it was first used in peanuts in North Carolina. I’ve been talking in 5-year increments (good control 5-10 years ago and less control in the past 5 years or so.) I decided to look at some of the data to see how accurate my statements are. In trials Rick, Brian and I have conducted, we have had Admire Pro and Thimet in place since at least 2013. I plotted injury caused by thrips versus year, and it looks like my statements are generally accurate. We also note that while Admire Pro performance has dropped off significantly, injury caused by thrips in presence of Thimet also appears to be greater. We plan to look at these data more closely and analyze the data more rigorously (and include yield.) But these data do support the case that thrips control is lower (greater injury) with imidacloprid now than during previous years.
