I’ve had several questions about preemergence (PRE) herbicides in peanut. Here are statements related to those questions.

Prowl H20 has good activity as a PRE treatment but I generally think it is better incorporated. One person asked if Prowl H20 could be applied with Valor plus Dual (Magnum). I don’t know of any negatives with this combination and it would be a strong single application. However, my answer was to apply the Prowl H20 with the Valor PRE and save the Dual or Dual Magnum for an early postemergence application (with Gramoxone plus Basagran). We need overlapping residuals early in the season to make sure we catch a rain for activation for at least one of the applications.

Strongarm has been around for over 20 years and still does a great job on some of our key weeds. It does carryover to corn (and sorghum) and there are concerns of carryover to cotton on some of the tighter soils we have in some counties. We also have resistance in Palmer amaranth, cocklebur and common ragweed in some areas of the state, especially common ragweed in the northeast and in Virginia. But it still does a great job on morningglories and eclipta. Some folks have been mixing Valor and Strongarm together and that can give really good control. Many times our 2 oz rate of Valor plays out on morningglories and a few other weeds. This mixture can be expensive and I still think you need Dual Magnum, Outlook, or Warrant as a PRE treatment with Strongarm plus Valor for grass control.
