Grand Island, Nebraska- Ella Rogers and Thomas Bradley, student members of the Backroad Sharp Shooters 4-H Club, competed with the North Carolina 4-H Shooting Sports Team at the National 4-H Shooting Sports Tournament in Grand Island, Nebraska, June 20–25, 2021. This year, the North Carolina team placed 2nd nationally. Team members are selected annually to represent our state based upon their commitment to skill development and their performance on the range at regional and state tournaments.

Rogers finished 19th out of 56 competitors in the recurve archery discipline helping to propel her team to 2nd place overall. Bradley finished 11th out of 35 competitors in the air pistol discipline helping his team earn 8th place overall.

In addition to Rogers and Bradley, Orange County 4-H volunteer Ryan Miller attended the tournament as the coach for the North Carolina Compound Archery Team. His team placed 2nd overall in the nation.

“We are proud of the accomplishments of our Orange County 4-H competitors and coaches”, says Orange County 4-H Agent Jonathon Smith. “These students have gone above and beyond to develop their skills. They are competing at the highest level and we are excited about how well they are representing our county and the State of North Carolina.”

Backroad Sharp Shooters 4-H Club Co-Leader and parent, Mark Rogers attended the event as well. “Ella and Thomas represented Orange County very well at Nationals”, says Rogers. “Their commitment to staying with training and practicing, even through the 2020 Nationals cancellation and not knowing if the 2021 event was going to be held until a few months prior to it actually happening, was extraordinary.”
