Since 1939, each June we have celebrated dairy month to recognize the hard work of our nations dairy farmers and to encourage families to make milk their beverage of choice based on its nutritional benefits. Incorporate low-fat milk, cheese and yogurt when planning meals to ensure you are getting the calcium, vitamin D and potassium your body needs. Despite rising production costs, milk continues to be a great value and fuel for your body at about 25 cents per 8-ounce glass. Want to visit a dairy farm? You can visit The Dairy Alliance for a virtual tour and learn how dairy foods go from farm-to-table.

  1. How many dairy cows call North Carolina home?
About 42,000. North Carolina has 145 dairy farms and a typical dairy farm has a herd of about 280 milking cows.
  2. How much milk does an average dairy cow produce per day?
NC Cows are working hard. The average dairy cow produces over 8 gallons of milk per day, or about 126 glasses. This equals almost 2500 gallons of milk every year.

Compare that to a serving of soft drink!
