Question 1:

I have a grower that is looking for an alternative to Prowl mainly because he has a problem with cleaning it out of his sprayer. I have him going 32 oz Prowl + 8 oz Dual PPI. Gramozone + Valor + Dual behind the planter. Do you have any ideas on what to replace the Prowl with?

Jordan Answer:

I don’t have a replacement for the PPI application. I understand the concerns about clean out, but Prowl is a proven and effective treatment that provides one additional mode of action in our resistance management approach. I would keep it in the system. It helps on Texas panicum and other grasses. The only alternatives are Warrant and Outlook and they are better applied PRE or mixed with something early POST (that is where I would put them.) The Prowl H2O will clean out better than the EC formulation of Prowl. It is likely more expensive but I think worth it if clean out is a critical issue. Other than staining equipment, I don’t think the rinsate will hurt other crops if put out PRE or over the top as POST (diluted in the next tank.)

Question 2:

Do you trust Prowl as a preemergence treatment for peanuts? Can we have confidence that it will consistently work? How long will it wait for a rain?

Jordan Answer:

Prowl H2O is more water soluble than EC formulations. That really helps. But I would use Dual Magnum or Dual type products before Prowl H2O PRE. I would not count on much from old, less soluble formulations of Prowl as a PRE. But Prowl H2O is a reasonable approach to a PRE. But I would incorporate it if at all possible. After 2 weeks of no rain products put out PRE become marginal (the first flush comes through in that period of time, so you don’t really rely too much on the control because you end up having to treat with POST herbicides for early escapes.)
