The Big Dreams Small Farms educational series kicks off March 19th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Caldwell County Center, 120 Hospital Ave. NE Suite 1, Lenoir NC. The first topic in this educational series is Cattle Production in North Carolina. Big Dreams Small Farms is an NC Farm School program aimed at helping new and future farmers understand various agricultural enterprises so they can be successful.

The first program on cattle production will cover topics inside the classroom. These topics are understanding cattle production systems, breed selection, infrastructure needs, animal care, marketing, and economics. After lunch, we will visit Hardrock Beef Cattle where farmer/owner Ronnie Holman will explain his cattle operation.

Ronnie Holman manages about 40 acres of pasture in Caldwell County and over 400 acres in Rutherford County. Hardrock Beef Cattle has earned many accolades and been recognized as the 2018 NC Cattlemen’s Environmental Stewardship Award Winner, 2014 NC Soil & Water Conservation District Farm Family of the Year, and 2013 Rutherford County Forage Farmer of the Year. This is an opportunity to have one full day dedicated to cattle considerations!

The Big Dreams, Small Farms Series also has day-long workshops on small ruminants, pastured poultry, small fruit production, and market garden. You can register for one or all of these sessions online. The cost is $25 per session or $100 for all six sessions, which includes materials, lunch, snacks, and a farm visit.
